Caroline Frances Appleton was born in London, England, the daughter of a prosperous Massachusetts merchant, Eben Appleton and his wife, Sarah Patterson, an Englishwoman. Caroline married Samuel Blatchford in 1844 and the couple had one son, Samuel Appleton Blatchford. The Sewards and Blatchfords shared social, political, and economic ties. Mrs. Blatchford’s husband was a secretary for William Henry Seward, a partner in the law firm Seward, Blatchford, and Griswold, as well as a Supreme Court Justice. Caroline Blatchford died in New York City.
