N.Y. 21. May. 1828
Dear Henry
The day before yesterday
our father
Birth: 1768-12-05 Death: 1849-08-24
and mother
Birth: 1769-11-27 Death: 1844-12-11
left here for home
- yesterday I called on Ogden Hoffman
Birth: 1793-05-03 Death: 1856-05-01
&
to day I send you by Mr Young
Unknown
the re-
sult of my interview with him. He seems
delighted with the idea of your comeing to the
City. Many, at the time, considered it he says
a wild scheme when he left Orange for and
good business, for the City & dull prospects in-
stead. He however rejoices that he did so.
The difference in expenses are not very con-
siderable. The pay for the same laborer about
three times. Whether business can in every
case be commanded – he is not exactly
prepared to say. Many men of much clev-
erness do not obtain it – and although
he seems to avoid the responsibility of ad-
vising your emigration hither, it seems
evident to me that he does not consid-
er the risk of to be very great– beside
he will not allow it to be the easiest
thing in the world to step into business
here, because that would lessen the mer-
it of what himself has done.

all this is upon the supposition that you came
single handed & alone. In relation to a
Co. partnership he thinks that an advantageous
one may be obtained. Upon turning ^in^ his
mind what my friend Wheeler
Unknown
said about some
old lawyers wanting a partner, he thinks
is must be Slosson
Birth: 1779-05-25 Death: 1832-04-21
. We shall see in a few
days. He is to enlist Mr Duer
Birth: 1805-05-25 Death: 1879-08-25
& we
shall have every thing cut & dryed
against your arrival.
Chancellor Jones
Birth: 1769-05-26 Death: 1853-08-09
is in Albany
Hoffman proposes making out a list
of the papers wanted & I will get
Mr Young to call on the Chancellor
The clock will strike "ten" in
five minutes when our bank note
dollar bill school will be open
& "stand to your places every one"
will be the word.
Yours as ever
B.J. Seward
