Saturday Evening Feb, 10
Dear S
Garlinghouse
dent of the NY & Erie rail road? he said he had heard so: I
of course made strange of it. and said it was news to me: I saw
by his manner that he had dropt a secret. and asked him
where he heard the report. he said he could not tell, but he had
heard it spoken of some where: I saw a thought I saw that
he was a little embarrassed by my enquiry: and I remarked
that it was not probably so as I would have heard of it.
Is there anything in this my suspicions were somewhat
awakened. and it suggested itself to me that he might
have been told that you were to be disposed of next fall
by appointment: and that he had let out the secret
he said he would not tell me who told him: can it be
that he is advised of, and with reference to this matter
and could any one have originated this report. of then
ones inventions? this cannot be, Is any one here knowing to the
proposition you suggested to me had been made, or can any
such one have originated the proposition to set you out of
the way? There is something in this.
