My Dear Henry
In returning from Mayville
I took a slight cold which brought on
a more severe turn of rheumatism
I suffered in January and have been
confined to a restless bed most of the
time for two days. But I am well
enough now I hope to sit most of
this day in the office, and although
I am entirely too fulle to to do much
myself, I hope to be able to make
a push through the clerks to get
your remaining papers by tomorrow
night.
But I took pen to say that on
recovery, I find there has been a letter
in the house &c hours from Nelson Beards-
ley
Reason:
The day of sale he says is fixed
for 29 – neither Cobb or McMasters

to do anything: Bear[ d ]
Reason: sley asks what he
shall do?
A letter from Mr Rathbone
says he is not looking for much
relief in the pressure of the times
for months – is gratified at the pros-
pect of closing with the A.L. & Trust
Co. – came into the purchase of the H
L. Co at your instance – is now very
anxious to get out of it & expects
you to help him out & closes with
a request that we give him no
more land.
Another letter from of the the
15th says stocks are rising handsome-
ly – money will be plenty by & by
the offer of N. Biddle
share, very likely you could do better
– will go with you if need be to see
– thinks you will in a few months
need your vaulable time, coast all
clear in Albany & East, prospects

fine, &c &c.
Another letter (herein) is all.
I find my hips less stiff, less painful
as the day has passed away. The
Lord enabling, I will complete the
papers & send by the next mail.
This over, I am resolved to
take sundry little jaunts for the ben-
efit of the Jeffersonian & my health.
I feel some delicacy about helping
the Whigs, but certainly can help
the Jeffersonians & may say & do
now what I may not after nomination
day. I think I can do something,
I call on Dr. Benedict
care will be not to ^do^ an immodest
thing, my effort will be to do a good
thing for the Whigs, & my prayer is
that you may reap the advantage
with them & success be with you.
yours with gratitude
