Dear Henry;
I send you herewith our “Office
Expense Account” with items in detail;
together with such few bills or vouchers
of moment, as were at hand.
Doubtless there are other vouchers; but
Bradley

you know never distinguished
between a bill and a letter. I cannot
at the moment single them out from
the mass of letters & papers he has
filed away.
From the anxiety you showed to
have this extended account at an early
day, I have supposed it necessary
to send you a copy as soon as possible:
& therefore give you the rough prepa-
ration, without stopping to improve or
transcribe it: This must be my apol-

ogy for sending you a paper with so
many marks of haste upon it.
As you will see, we had remitted
a little over $1,000 in April to the
Genl Land Office – and the arrival
of Junius A Smith
Birth: 1807-05-13 Death: 1864-07-29
– (charged with
an examination of some items in the
schedules prepared by Humphreys

, of
errors, with our land Ledgers;) furnishes
me opportunity, which I embrace to
remit
To relax as intensity; to make less tense or violent • To forgive; to surrender the right of punishing a crime • To pardon, as a fault or crime • To give up; to resign • To send back • To transmit money, bills, or other things in payment for goods • To restore • To slacken • To abate in violence for a time •
$3,156.87 more.
We are doing but little.
Your Grateful Brother
B J Seward
Smith’s marriage brings another
partner into the concern & diminishes
the Clerk – we gain little help by it.
He expects (I learn) to visit Auburn

that it will be well to procure someone
in his stead & while he is there, to
write him not to return. If this
be against your wishes, write me.
P.S. Second. The Vouchers make such
a ponderous parcel, although there are
few of them compared with the number
of items in the account, that
I concluded on second reflection
to omit sending them.
