Dear Mrs Seward
Although some years have elapsed since
we met, and our pathway through life is so widely dissimilar it is not probable
that we shall often meet again, the pleasant friends I found in Auburn
are often remembered with grateful emotion particularly yourself and
Mr. Seward
kindness to the stranger “long time ago” for that has often occurred
before this, but simply this-that I could not resist the temptation
I felt to offer my congratulations on the joyful consumation which has
crowned the zealous exertions of so many warm hearts and true, and
changed my usually quiet husband
few days only, how can I help it, he would exclaim. When the man
and principle both warrant all my exertion, a union that so
rarely occurs; only once before in his time, so he asserts and that
was when the lamented Clinton
you with all this when your time must be so much occupied
weightier affairs, believe me dear Frances, I rejoice in your
prosperity with unmingled delight, not that I think you ambitious
in the least yet you cannot but feel proud of the confidence
reposed in your husband by so large a body of the Freeman of this
great State, which have thus given their assurance that he will

wisely direct the government entrusted to his care.
Should you find the leisure and inclination, remember
how happy it would make your old old friends in Middleville
to see, or hear from you again, where we remain in status
quo with only the marks which old time is leaving us as he
passes along. I have not heard from Auburn since I saw
you there on my return from Ohio. Since that time my
Frederick
shall direct it where I hope you may get it, not for anything
it contains- otherwise than this, that you may know how
heartily we rejoice in the result of the recent election for
ours is a Whig neighbourhood, with only a few exceptions-
Please remember me affectionately to one we used
to designate as Aunt Clara
forgotten me. That the blessings of this life may be
crowned with a happy immortality is the earnest prayer
of your friend M F Gordon
