West Point Jan 29 1842
My dear Aunt
I thought I would write you a letter
this afternoon as I have nothing else to do. It will be
3 months next Monday since I came here, the river has
been frozen one month of that time here, but not very
hard, if this weather keeps on it will open the middle
of next month as it is very warm. I study Algebra
Geography Grammar and read and spell twice a day,
there are twenty four scholars here now about half
of them are going to West Point next June, there are 7
here that have been there but could not pass the
examination in the first part of this month so they
were sent away after being there six months. You
do not have to know as much as I thought to
enter but you have to accomplish a great many

studies in a short time after you get
there, or get sent away. We go to church twice
every Sunday, and get 15 or 20 verses in the Bible
to recite in the evening or go to Sunday school
at the Point and get lessons, part go & part
stay, I stay as yet. I received a letter form Ma
Birth: 1805-09-24 Death: 1865-06-21

this morning she says that Mr. Dickens
Birth: 1812-02-07 Death: 1870-06-09
has
arrived at Boston in the Brittania she does
not know whether he will go through Albany
or not, she also writes that Samuel Blatchford
Birth: 1820-03-09 Death: 1893-07-07

is there having just come from Utica. I am
sorry to hear that Grandpa
Birth: 1772-04-11 Death: 1851-11-13
has not been able
to go to Albany, I hope he will be able to go yet
as Ma says he is getting better. These two months
that I have been here do not seem very long
and the rest of the term will be gone before
long. I hope you will answer this as soon as you
get time
You affectionate Nephew
Augustus H. Seward
I have written Ma’s name on the outside and shall have to put
on a new cover
