Auburn December 11th 1844.
My Dear Son
Your mother’s
be your correspondent for the present. We were all made
happy on Monday the 9th by the advent of a little stranger
your sister
alarming symptoms, the babe seems healthy and we hope
that before long the health of the mother will be quite restored.
We have not yet bestowed a name on the child but she
will probably bear the name of her from whom she derives
her being.
Your Aunt
boys are very well. Ma thinks it hard that you have
not written to her in three long weeks. We are all quite
happy that you have learned almost how to avoid those
ugly demerit marks.
Your Grand Mother
of my last letters from there. I have scarcely a hope that
she survives. I have visited her twice this autumn and am
very unhappy that I cannot return there again.

by difficulties with Mexico which may excite hopes of distinction
