Philadelphia April 11th 1847
My Dear Son
Captain Alden
Birth: 1811-05-06 Death: 1870-09-10
who is staying here offers to deliver
you a letter from us – which suggests thoughts of some important
matters – I am desirous to Know your prospects and hopes
of graduating with your class, But beyond that event begins
the important one of entering upon ^active^ life, how, when, where,
and under what auspices.
Do you desire or prepare to remain in the Army, Do you deem
it necessary under the present circumstances of the country, I would
it might be otherwise – But you have a right to judge and deter-
mine for yourself – What will be the respite you will have
after completing your course?
Can I do any thing to contribute to your comfort before the
close of your examination, or when it shall end – Would
you like to receive a visit at the Academy before I return
home? or would it hinder your preparation, or embarrass
you – Do you or will you need any funds?
I shall be a few days at the Astor House in New
York after tomorrow – A letter addressed to me there will
determine whether I call at the Point or pass by, owing
explanations on the many important respects I have suggested
until we meet at home, a meeting I am impatient for and
which I hope may last long, Affectionately
Your father
