Tuesday Jan 30th 1849
My dear Henry,
I will write a line
to Philadelphia though I can
add little to my letter of
Saturday – Our snow has been
nearly all washed away with
the rain – Last night the
wind changed and we
again have a little snow –
The children were both a little
indisposed last night but
are better this morning – the
influenza prevails very exten-
sively— I went to Church

with the children Sunday –
Yesterday it rained all day
I am reading Macaulay
the evenings that is when I
am at liberty – I have read
some of the last chapters
of "Rational Psycology"
of which I can comprehend
and with which I am pleased
There are many beautiful senti-
ments which appear to me
like a beautiful piece of
sculpture shrouded in a thick
coat of mail – I cannot
now see why the Dr
chosen to clothe his ideas
in such impregnable language
it is not the way he talks
or preaches –

an immense Valentine
large enough to contain
the little girl to whom it
is to be sent – I have
not heard a word from
Clarence

I get the Albany news
