Washington March 28, 1849
My Dearest Frances
You see I am
here still. My valet
Unknown
counts 108
letters which I have written and with
the aid of John Oliphant
Birth: 1831-08-15 Death: 1888-03
been sealed
and transmitted through the Post Office
today. I think there will not be 100
more to be written.
It is very bad to
leave my field of duty. Things are
coming so right that I should be able
to do much good and meet just
ever high expectations by remaining here
a week more. But John Gibsons
Unknown
war
rages at Albany and I must go.
I want to see you and the chilldren

but I could forego that pleasure ^for^ a
few days more to secure the good

I owe to such generous friends.
is I think I shall leave here day after
tomorrow and after Tuesday proceed to
Auburn. I can say little to you
of news for I am closeted in a soli-
tary chamber. Not a soul in this
vast house but myself my servant

and
a watchman

. My breakfast and
dinner are brought from a Recess. I
ride or walk once a day to the Depart-
ments.
There is continual need of counsel
here, but the officials although kind are
not yet aware of it. I wonder how
any body gets along in government without
a head.
Ever your own Henry.
