Teusday April 3d
My dear Sister,
Your letter came last evening
This morning I went with it to Mrs Porters
Birth: 1800-04-12 Death: 1886-03-29

Since I wrote to you Caroline
Birth: 1839-05-10 Death: 1849-04-10
has been
suffering with a distracting pain in her
head – Saturday they nearly despaired of
her living – She was delirious through the
day I feared dropsy of the brain – but the
Dr
Unknown
says it is neuralgia produced by
some derangement of the stomach rather
an unsatisfactory explanation to me –
Sunday she was somewhat relieved and
to day and yesterday though her head
ache continues she is sensible and much
more comfortable – though very feeble and
exceedingly emaciated – I have not seen
her since this last attack – Until then
she was not confined to her bed – I will
now endeavour to answer the Dr’s questions
and rectify some mistakes I made previously
Caroline is 10 years old – The abscess on the left
side nearly over the projecting hip bone
I should think four or five inches above it –
It was opened in the first place with the

lancet and has continued to discharge ever
since without artificial aid – has never
been entirely closed since – though it discharges
less at some times than others – The matter
discharged in the first place a dark brown
thick, and offensive to the smell – now
it is yellow, thick, but free from odour –
Her bowels have been in a good condition
until this last attack – now inclined to
constipation – I cannot help hoping she may
be able to get to Dr Vanderveer
Birth: 1796 Death: 1857-07-05
– I am confident
he will be better able than any one else to
at least ascertain the nature of her disease –
The pain she has in her head is chiefly in
the forehead – much aggravated by motion
or exertion of any kind – I am glad
to hear you are in New York it must be
an agreeable change – Henry
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
does not
write when he will go South but I presume
as early as the 15th which will be before
you return – I cannot leave Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
at
home neither can I take her unless she
is better than she is at present – She has
never been entirely well – I think her throat
is in some way affected – the Dr thinks not
She has pain in the bowels – suffers much
from constipation and has occasionally chills
and fever – night before last I thought
Page 3

she was troubled with worms – She seemed to have
a rising in her throat which I could only
relieve by salt and water – The Dr gave
her medicine for worms the next day – without
any effect – She says her throat is sore
on the outside – and always complains when
it is toug touched – I think it is a little swollen
the Dr cannot perceive it – her bowels are
tender – have been bloated but are not now –
All these things considered I think it wiser
for me to stay at home with her unless
she should be materially better –
I wanted to write a long letter but cannot
Caroline Smith
Birth: 1807
came and sat the hour
I would have written and now I must
close for the mail – Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
is home
and handsome saving too much whiskers –
Your own Sister –
