Florida June 24th 1849
My Dear Sister Frances,
I have often
thought that I would write you
and express our disappointment that
you did not visit this place on
your recent tour to Washington.
I have learnt long since to feele
that all of Henrys
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
movement were
uncertain and not to place much
reliance ever on his promises
to come for the reason that he is
not the master of them and also
that his engagements consume
his entire time. Each visit to the
his native place is attended by
so much of sacrifice that I feel
we should not wish him to come
and for yourself I could promise
you but little of satisfaction. Matters
are so changed here from what they
were when you first began to come
that it must be painful to you.

How often do I wish I was near
you that I might advise with ^you^ on
matters that so much concern me
and on which I perhaps need much
counsel. There is none living in whose
judgment and fidelity I could place
so much reliance. This necessity
of confiding the care of household
matters and also that of children
to an irresponsible person is not
what it seems difficult to comply
with. Sarah
Unknown
is doing all she can
but she is young, inexperienced and
of a frail frame. I fear that she
will wear herself out. Our housekeeper

(a far good one) was under the
necessity of leaving us, but I am
in hopes will soon return, where
Sarah hardship will be relieved.
We have moved in a house partly
new and repaired and as it is the
best my family has ever been in
I feel I ought to be satisfied with
it. It is quite convenient and is a
comfortable and pleasant home.

You have doubtless heard of Fathers

illness, he has been more comfort-
able for the last two days, his
worst symptoms have been better
but he is exceedingly weak, sits up
only to have his bed made, takes
a large quantity of stimulant
Brandy and Quinine, and eats quite
largely — We talked of Telegraph[ ing ]

Reason:

Henry to come on, but felt that
the issue was not very certain of
being fatal and that it would be
attended with sacrifice of conven-
ience and business to himself and
others that it would not be expe-
dient and from a letter from him
to Mr Grier
Birth: 1802-09-27 Death: 1878-12-20
we have felt that we
did right— If he or yourself could
do him any good I should have in-
sisted on it more —
Monday afternoon, I do not think
that Father is not quite as well but it
is difficult to tell.
I send twenty shillings for 2 copies
of Henry's Life of John Quincy Adams

Will you be kind enough to let Clarence

share them, one addressed to myself
