My Dear Augustus,
I have read your
Mother’s
cur most earnestly in the advice and
entreaties she addresses to you to return
this summer in Auburn – You will
of course consult your own judgement
and feelings about remaining in the
Army. We shall be able to furnish
a situation for you which will be
comfortable and respectable if you
choose to return to civil life – as I sin-
cerely hope you will – But whether
you conclude to remain here or to re-
turn to the Army – it is quite time

for you to return and renew your intercourse
with the family and with its friends.
Time is wearing on us all, and we
cannot consent that you remain a
stranger to our trials our sorrows
and the pleasures that through the
Kindness of Heaven occasionally mingle
with and relieve them –
Your mother is a mother to be
cheered and sustained by the affection
of her children – Your brother Frederick
is beginning the studies to discipline him
for life – Your little brother
sister
and I should be pleased to know
you intimately as you are growing in
years and manhood – We shall
go to Washington in December and you
can spend some time there with us

pleasantly and I think profitably–
So my dear boy, come home if it is only
for a few months and make us all
happy –
