Sunday Aug 11th
My dear Henry,
I am hoping every day to hear
of the passage of the California Bill but
no such news comes yet– Mr Pearce's
Birth: 1805-12-14 Death: 1862-12-20
bill
has passed so says our telegraph report–
I am as yet unable to ascertain how much
less Texas obtains by this than what she
claimed but I should think not much–
No one seems to take the pains to enquire–
Mr Blatchford
Birth: 1820-03-09 Death: 1893-07-07
says he was ^is^ in favour of
having it settled somehow – so it is –
and so it might have been long ago had
the few no principle at stake –
Yesterday I invited the Blatchfords

and Morgans

to tea– About 5 oclock came Catherine

, and baby

Huson

returned to day
to Romulus– Catherine remains a week–
her h child occupies almost the whole of
her time as babies usually do that
of affectionate mothers– My company
went home at ten– I thought how
much more we would all enjoy a visit
of this kind if you could be with us–

when will that time be? I thought

Either Augustus Canfield

or Francis Allyn Canfield
Birth: 1832-02-20 Death: 1876-01-14
would meet
her at Philadelphia– they ought to do so–
We all went to Church this morning– the
day is quite cool– Grandpa
Birth: 1772-04-11 Death: 1851-11-13
is setting
with a cloak on but declines a fire–
Mr Blatchford had a letter from Clarence
Birth: 1828-10-07 Death: 1897-07-24

from Boston– he had received his funds
and letters– I shall look for a letter
from Halifax tomorrow or the next day–
The Summer is drawing to a close and you
will not be be home until it is ended –
Tell Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
the garden is as full as shrubbery
as he can desire – The climbing roses
which adorned the mountain ash so
beautifully and gracefully have at length
faded – none are left now but the monthly’s
The Gandy Tiger lilly is in full flower
and very abundant – while the Phlox, Petunia
and verbenas decorate the beds – Never
until yesterday has Mr Curtis
Birth: 1814-08-13 Death: 1885-08-16
completed
the Pedestal for the vase it looks very
well but seems to me would be improved
by painting – there are so many pieces of
the stone joined by plaster –
