Editorial Note

The date of this letter was changed from January 31 to January 30 because the 30th was a Thursday.
Dear Sir,
Having got through my business much
sooner than I anticipated, I shall leave by
first train in the morning — 6 O’clock.
I saw Caroline
Birth: 1834-07-25 Death: 1922-02-28
, & found her quite anxious to
go home with you, & enter a school somewhere
North I think however, she could be persuaded
to remain where she is to the end of the session
but all beyond that is hopeless. She is not willing
to encounter the rigid discipline & almost certain
disappointment of a year in the highest class,
& judging from what she tells me, it does not
seem desirable that she should. But there is
time enough to think of it.
Regretting my inability to pay my respects to
Mrs Seward
Birth: 1805-09-24 Death: 1865-06-21
& Mrs Worden
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03
, I remain your friend
& Servt
M. D. Canfield
