Editorial Note

This letter was written in 1851 based on its contents. It was changed from May 21, 1850
Auburn Tuesday 20t May
My dear Augustus,
You will have received the telegraph
Message before this letter telling you of the
failure of the application to Gen Scott
Birth: 1786-06-13 Death: 1866-05-29

The Gen – W writes that on making enquiries
he found that more officers had already been
detailed for that situation than customary –
4 being the usual number & prof. Bache
Birth: 1806-07-19 Death: 1867-02-17
having
obtained 7 – Of course he added that you should
have the preference in case of any additional
detail – this is not probable at present –
We do not feel willing to allow you to go
to Corpus Christi & tomorrow your father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10

sets out in quest of employment for you
which I doubt not he will obtain – I think
some of going with him to New York - I hope
you will not give yourself more uneasiness than
you can avoid as your father seldom undertakes
any thing that he does not accomplish – He has
already written to some civil engineers
Unknown
– He will
be in Albany Thursday – from there will go
to New York and then to Orange County

I wish very much I could see you to day
suppose you meet us in Albany Thursday – I
think I will go there at least – In haste –
your affectionate Mother –
