Auburn July 9 1851
My dear Uncle,
Mr Carter
Birth: 1802-03-03 Death: 1887-10-11
came into the office this
morning to see me in relation to the loan you propose
making He had with him a certificate for .20 shares
of telegraph stock and a letter from a Mr Chapman
Birth: 1802-09-13 Death: 1886-08-09
who
is the chief clerk of Mr Faxton
Birth: 1784-01-10 Death: 1881-11-30
. The letter stated that
the transfer of the stock would be made upon Mr Carter’s
making an assignment upon the back of the certifi-
cate, but that no ways could be issued upon such
transfer until the return of Mr Faxton from Europe.
His return is expected in September.
I wrote an assignment upon the back
of the certificate which Mr Carter is to sign and send
to the Company at Utica. I requested him to ask
the clerk, Mr Chapman, to send you here ( to me ) a
certificate showing that the transfer had been made
upon the Company books – that the shares stood in
your name, and that upon the action of Mr Faxton the
script would be issued to you. This he promised to do & upon
the receipt of the certificate and the delivery of the note
I propose to give him the check.
This will take a day or two. In the
mean time I have thought best to advise you of the

arrangement so that in case you disapprove of it you
can telegraph me to retain the check. If I hear
nothing from you by telegraph I shall presume that
the arrangement is satisfactory.
Ever gratefully your nephew
Clarence A. Seward.
