My Dear Henry
The enclosed letter will make
known to you its object.
I know but little of the principles and
motives on which appointments to office
are made and less of the candidates or
their claims, but I should think this
appointment of Mr Coburn
a wise one for him and for yourself
He has been connected with the Owego
Academy for thirty years as I have been
informed and very successful in training
Teachers and is very much respected
in that place, He is a Whig I think
of the right stripe and I should sup-
his appointment would be particularly
gratifying to the people there, Certainly
if Mrs Seward
would receive it they having been em-
ployed as Teacher and Pupil, and Teachers

for years. She regards him as an honest
and worthy man, I have met him but a
few times and my impression are very
favorable. If therefore you can consistently
do him the favor he ask we shall
acknowledge it as done for us.
I have now a dozen masons at work
and the first story is up, in a fortnight
if the weather favors us the wall will
be ready for the roof. I gave your address
to the men the other day and they all
appear to be much pleased with it.
