Monday March 6th
My dear Henry
Until I received
this morning your letter
of Friday I had endeavored
to persuade myself that my
fears were the result of
a diseased imagination &
disordered nerves − Thoughts
of the fearful consequences
of the passage of that
infamous bill have kept
me awake the two last
nights − Is this the
end of that freedom
for which our forefathers
Page 2

suffered? Not one century
has passed and we are
returning to a bondage
in comparison with which
our colonial servitude,
was liberty − May
Heaven avert such a
catastrophe  yet I
see no just ground for
hope while the North
is traitorous to herself −
I see also an element
to fan the discord and
cripple our power even
were we united, which
does not seem to have
occurred to others 
Page 3

Dont be troubled about
me − I am better −
May God preserve you
from faltering in defense
of Justice and Human rights
ever your own
Frances 
