Washington May 2d 1856.
My Dear Lazette,
Mother
Birth: 1805-09-24 Death: 1865-06-21
and Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
received
your letter while I was out at a party, they
are still mourning the loss of the faithful dog
 Death: 1856-04-29
.
The incident comes not without its consolations
to us – In other times it would have been the
masters life, not merely the dog's, that would
have been demanded as a penalty for non
complaince with vicious and barbarous
prejudices – Shame is already on the heels
of the pack and a year or two more and
we shall then hear returning services and efforts at
atonement – Affectionately your brother
William H Seward
