My dear Henry
I am in favour of your
going to California with Mr
Stanley
Birth: 1810-01-10 Death: 1872-07-26
— it would do you good
to spend two months away
from cares and pains. I was
unable to talk much when you
were home and do not remember
what I said about the sea side
except that I thought the air
beneficial — I have never thought
of going to a fashionable watering
place during the fashionable
season — It was my purpose to
go to the sea shore sooner when
on my way to Washington in
September — perhaps Long Branch
would be as little out of
Page 2

our route as any place and by
that time all the Larger Hotels
would be closed, and you
would say, it would be very
uncomfortable — if we found it so
we could go on to Washington
I would like to have both Aunt
Clara
Birth: 1793-05-01 Death: 1862-09-05
and Lazette
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03
go with me
to Washington — if we leave the
visit to the sea shore out of the
question I think I will go to
Washington about the 7t of October
I have never supposed we should
keep that house beyond the present
Congress and would like they
should go there before it
is otherwise occupied — I am
stronger now than when you
were at home — but make no
calculation about future health —

Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
wishes me to ask you if
he may sell the house he built
he has an offer with the promise
to pay within a year — Will
would like to be allowed to
take the proceeds of the sale and
go next Spring to seek his
fortune at the West — He is
not satisfied with his present un-
profitable life — he ought to have
more occupation — Though he is
still young I am not sure but
it may be best to allow him
to make the experiment — He is
old for his years and self reliant —
if he continues here two or three
years longer I do not see that
he is to derive any benefit from
it and I never had any faith
in his remaining longer —
The packet of pamphlets came last
night —
Your own
Frances —
