My dear Mrs Seward,
I cannot allow
another steamer to go
without a word direct
to you. Your kind notes
cheered me when I
needed cheer. At
last I am surely
doing well. For a
while in Paris I be-
gan to despair; but

my journey in the country
down the valley of the Loire
& to the Pyrenees gave me
a start, & I have been
improving constantly since,
so that now I have much
of the condition of health,
though I have not yet
gained all my natu-
ral strength & am still
troubled by a morbid sen-
sibility of the spinal sys-
tem, It yet so slight
compared with the past
that was it does not

interfere with the en-
joyment of life.
I have seen here much
Of society & of public
In a few days I
return to France to
visit de Tocqueville
mandy. Afterwards I
shall journey about
England, Scotland &
Ireland until I set
My face homeward in
November, when I hope
To be fit for public

duty.
While here I avoid
most carefully all pub-
lic occasions, where I
might be expected to
speak, so that I need
not be troubled by the
excitement & that my
name may be kept
out of newspapers. Pri-
vate society I enjoy much,
& I attend the debates at
Paris.
Tell your husband
me. My address is always care of the Baring
Brothers & Co. London.
Ever sincerely yours,
Charles Sumner
