Dear Mrs Seward,
The enclosed letter from
a most respectable gentle-
man
first to Rome, & then back
to Paris at last found me
here in this peaceful re-
treat. If I were at home
I should consider it care-
fully & do what the cause
seemed to require. But in

default of such opportunity
I enclose it to you, trusting
that through you its con-
tents at least may
reach your husband
is all that I shall say
with regard to it.
Not a word have I
had from Washington since
Congress began—not
even from my colleagues
& the only American paper
that I have seen is

the Weekly Post.
My life is tranquil.
I begin the day with my
torments; but find ample
resources in the friends I
have made here particularly
among men of science. I
have also the advantage
of an excellent physic-
ian
fame, who [ being ]
Reason: acci-
dentally here for the
winter, has made him-
self acquainted with

my case. They promise
me health again; but
they insist upon caution
now. I must ex-
terminate the morbid
symptoms.
The French are famous
for ascertaining the precise
character of a malady. I
am sure that mine is
now thoroughly understood.
Every day when I feel better
than usual I talk of starting
for Washington, & the the Drs.
protest.—Ever yours & your husband's—
Charles Sumner
