Macedon, Aug. 5 th, 58
My dear Mrs. Seward
I am very grateful
for your kind remembrance
of me and thank you for the
many interesting items of
intelligence your letter con-
tains. I am very glad that
your health has improved,
but sorry to hear that dear
precious Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
is not well.
Still I trust that with
such affectionate and judi-
cious care she will grow
stronger with years and yet
enjoy good health.
My school closed three
weeks ago. Then I went to

[top Margin]
the highest esteem and
veneration for his character.
Affectionately and gratefully yours,
S. D. Hance

Canandaigua on business,
stopped in Farmington to
visit some friends, pro-
tracting my stay until yes-
terday. How good your
letter looks, and how happy
I shall be to accept your
kind invitation to visit
you whenever it shall
suit your pleasure.
My health is good and my
hands are not so swollen
or painful as they were
last winter and spring.
Still my friends wish me
to consult some of our
most skillful physicians
in New York. But I have
not yet decided to go, having
very little hope that med-
icine can cure them.

What would you advise
me, my dear Mrs. Seward? –
Or rather allow me to
make this inquiry when
I am with you.
We are having delightful
weather which I hope
dear Fanny is able to enjoy
going to Pisgah, rambling
in the woods, and riding
on horseback. Please give
her my best love and say
if she has not grown too
old and tall for the ex-
cursions of last summer
I shall be happy to re-
peat them with her.
I am glad to learn that
she has been able to con-
tinue her studies so well
and hardly need say how
Page 4

how much I shall be
interested in seeing the
good progress she has
made. Poor little
Rover!

– I am very sorry
she has been pained by
his loss. Did she have
have him laid beside
her old friend Watch?
 Death: 1856-04-29

It must be very pleas-
ant for you to be at home
again with all of your
family – God grant you
may be spared to each
other and to the world
many long prosperous
years. Much love to Mrs.

And may I present to

through you
my humble regards and
