Washington March 16
My dear Son,
Yours of the 6 has just
come – I write immediately
hoping my letter may return by
the steamer which brought
yours – I have a letter from
Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
this morning telling us
of the sudden death of
Susy Wharton
Birth: 1850-06-06 Death: 1859-03-13
– She had
not been well for two weeks
but Fred says “was talking
and walking about an
hour before her death” – The
Physicians
Unknown
pronounced it disease
of the heart – I have been
writing letters to Mrs Wharton

and Anna
Birth: 1836-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02
, who will feel
nearly as much grieved as
her Mother – Poor little
Molly
Birth: 1847
too will sadly miss
her constant companion –
Page 2

Anna had been at home
only 5 days –
Frances
Birth: 1826-12-12 Death: 1909-08-24
did not come
here – The Dr
Unknown
thought the
journey too long to make
twice in a short time
and she was anxious to see
Frank

– She returns to Can-
andaigua
to day – Aunty

is still there –
The senate adjourned Thursday.
Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
is now preparing to
go home – We all hope to
be there about the 1st of
April – though Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
has
a plan of driving me
some part of the way with
our horses – if he should
we shall be much longer
on the way – Father is
talking some of going abroad
for a few months – R.M.
Blatchford
Birth: 1798-04-24 Death: 1875-09-04
has been here to
Page 3

persuade him to go with
him & his family
x Birth: 1836-05-25  Death: 1908-10-01  Birth: 1834-10-04  Death: 1922-06-24
next
month – nothing decided –
I am preparing to leave the
28 if possible – Catherine
Birth: 1837 Death: 1878-04-08

will stay a short time
longer to arrange the house
for leasing – We shall leave
some one here so that if you
prefer you can sleep here
when in the City –
The Napiers
x Birth: 1819-09-19  Death: 1898-12-19  Birth: 1823-12-20  Death: 1911-08-24

Lord Lyons
Birth: 1817-04-06 Death: 1887-12-05
does not
come though daily expected –
I do not think they will
leave much before us –
We see them often –
I am better than I have been
all Winter – Will &
Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
are well & send
love – It is a great comfort
to get your letters so
regularly –
Page 4

All of the members of Congress
and most of the Senators
have left the city –

as well as usual – I
shall write again before
