15 ^th, 1859
My dear Fanny,
A day spent in
the British museum for the most part
and in returning visits was closed last
night by attending a very magnificent dinner
party given by General Gore and his wife. He is
of the rank of General Scott –
This morning I breakfasted with Mr Leonard – a
very learned and literary man – Mr & Mrs Grote (he
the best and most thorough historian of Greece, the
Marquis of Landsowne, and others constituted the party.
I have been since that time looking for Governor and
Mrs Fish without success – They arrived last night –
I met with Mr and Mrs Keitt of South Carolina at
the American legation –
This evening I dine at the Reform club,
Tomorrow I go to Cambridge, and I close this letter
now because I shall not be able to secure its
passage to Liverpool at a later time, I shall re-
turn to London on the 17 ^th – I have reconsidered
my prospects and have concluded to go
direct to Paris on the 27 ^th, and
to return this way and to go to
Scotland in the Autumn if the
Napiers shall then be
at Thirlestane
