I think I can never forget my first night on the Adriatic.
It was a wonderful sunset which ushered it in. For the
first time in my life I saw arising the hues of the evening
sky ^long^ masses of pale vegetable green. It is eight
o,clock, Trieste is half an hour before us — a voyage
of 1200 miles has brought us from the South into the
North, from summer to Autumn from the East into the
West, from ^savage^ barbarous nations into civilization. I go
now for a day or two to Venice, then through Northern
