Editorial Note

William Henry Seward’s series of travel letters in 1859 are organized and listed by the date of each entry.
Marbourg Tuesday night, Oct 25.
I am resting here for the night, on the way to Venice
which place I hope to reach tomorrow evening or
Wednesday morning. I left Vienna this morning,
Thand here crossed the Tyrol. The ^high^ mountain tops
are covered with snow, but as yet there has
been no frost on the vallies of the Alps. The
Dahlias and Chrysanthemums are as fresh to day
as when I looked upon them ten days ago on my

way to Vienna. I find that I understated the length
of this great rail road. It is 535 English miles.
