Wednesday
Aug 22–
My dear Son
I am of course
greatly disturbed by
the reports about Wash-
ington and in hourly
expectation of hearing
of an attack. I
dread having the
communication obstructed
as it was last winter.
We hear of you in
various places
I hope you all keep
well — I have a
letter from Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11
written at Ft Buchanan
now the 10th of July —
So far away from
Eastern communication
of course he knows
nothing of us —
The letter contained
but 3 lines & expressed
a doubt whether
it would reach its
destination — He was
going back to Santa
Fe the next week
I do not find Ft
Buchanan on the map
but infer from his
former letter that it
is south of Ft Craig
the date of his
previous letter –
We are all well
write a line to say
you are if nothing
more — May God
preserve you all
Mother —
