Editorial Note
My dear Son
A report came
to me yesterday that
one of Captain Kennedy’s
Birth: 1827 Death: 1863-09-22
,
Lieuts was to be displaced
to give Samuel Seward
Birth: 1838-04-16 Death: 1916-02-22
his position – Of course
there was the usual
amount of goodnatured
observations made on
the subject – I sent
for Captain Kennedy
this morning to ascertain
the foundation for these
reports – He says Maj.
Ledlie
Birth: 1832-04-14 Death: 1882-08-15
wrote to him that Gov. Seward
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
wished a Lieutenancy for his nephew,
and asked Kennedy if
he had a vacancy.
Kennedy has but one
vacancy which he had
promised Maj. Ledlie
for a friend
Unknown
of his the (Majors) – by the
name of Johnson
Death: 1864-07-29
.
If Ledlie could provide
some other place for his
friend, Kennedy would
much prefer S. Seward.
This he intended writing
to Ledlie to day but
seemed to prefer I should
suggest it to your Father
& ask him to arrange it
with Ledlie – Kennedy
says Johnson knows
nothing of the place yet.
The 3 Lieuts. already
appointed are our
neighbours. Cowan

Woodruff

3rd – I think it
would produce much
ill feeling were Sam
placed over any of
these, though I think
Kennedy rather inclined
to give him the 3rd –
Will you talk with
your Father & ask him
to see that no injustice
is done. T
Captain Kennedy reports his
company as numbering already
125 – 25 more are required
What a pity it is that
every educated man insists
upon a commission –
I hear nothing further

walks, but with difficulty – He is not
well – but constantly
at work – Tell Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11
I write to him tomorrow –
God bless you
Mother –
Charles Warden

is still living – his friends
think a little better
