Friday Nov 15 th
My dear Son
The news of the
great victory at Beaufort
is at length confirmed
it was a day of universal
rejoicing yesterday – Our
Regiment was out and
flags were floating abundantly
To me the circumstance
that it was achieved with
so little loss of life is
one of its most gratifying
features – I wish the Southern people would
admit that we are
Page 2

the strongest without
many more battles —
I suppose Anna
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02
is home
again by this time –
I wrote to her on my
return from Rochester
she may not have the
letter – it contained
nothing of importance.
Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
had a letter from
Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
last night which
indicates that he is
a little more at leisure
than he was some weeks
ago — I went to
see Charles Warden
Birth: 1833-07-10 Death: 1883-08-30
one
day this week – he is
recovering and impatient
Page 3

to get back to Washington
though far from able
to do so – He is much
pleased with his situation
there — I think
Stephen Austin
Birth: 1815 Death: 1865-07-24
considers
his son-in law Lester
Birth: 1830-03-27 Death: 1902-09-16

neglected – Austin is
sick much of the time
himself, of course every
thing looks less bright –
The Consul
Birth: 1817-06-04 Death: 1868-05-03
to Honolulu
writes to Dr Robinson
Birth: 1804-02-04 Death: 1889-07-28
that
he “would cheerfully
have appointed him
resident physician but
Mr Seward said
nothing to him about it” –
Page 4

so there is disappointment
there –
I am sorry to give
you this letter in answer
to yours which are so inter-
esting and cheering —
Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
walks about without
crutch or cane though a
little lame yet. He &
Jenny
Birth: 1839-11-18 Death: 1913-11-09
went to a military
ball Wednesday evening —
Tell Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11
he must
be too busy to write to me.
I am glad Anna has her
cousin
Unknown
with her – Love
to your Father and may
God bless you all
Mother —
