New York, September 16, 186 3.
My dear uncle,
Mr R.M. Blatchford
me of the very kind manner in which you
received the suggestion of my becoming an
applicant for the office of clerk of the Su-
preme Court. Though it may very probably
be that when the judges meet in Decem-
ber it will be found that the application
should not be presented, I cheerfully recog-
nise my duty to thank you now for
this present manifestation of interest in
my welfare, and to assure you that a
retrospect of the past twenty two years,
so continuously marked by your
personal kindness, never fails to evoke
emotions of the profoundest gratitude. Not
a day passes that I do not acknowledge
my direct indebtedness to your to most
affectionate care, maintenance & education
of myself for all the comfort, prosperity &
happiness I now enjoy, and I am now,
as I have ever been, Most gratefully
Your Nephew
