Editorial Note

Mourning stationery dates it after June 21, 1865, when Frances Miller Seward died. Content suggests August 11 rather than June 1865. July 14 Frances Adeline Seward comments that she is glad Frederick is writing again (after his injury). These letters also discuss the heat of August that Clarence Armstrong Seward refers to. Clarence also states that his eyes don’t allow him to use ink in an Aug. 9 letter. However, Frederick best dates the letter. August 10 Frederick writes to William Henry Seward about consulting a doctor and returning from Cape May where he is staying with Fanny. Frederick returns to Washington D.C. the next Wednesday Therefore, the preceding Friday seems like the correct date for this letter.
Friday PM.
