Auburn.
Monday. 6th Aug. 1866
My dearest Father,
Your letter of the 4th
came today – So, I will
not claim that the garden
has charms superior to Rock
Creek. I will even confess
to a belief that those of
the latter exceed the former.
But we have robins in
place of Catydids – and
there is our advantage
about them – Catydid’s never
will tell what it was
Page 2

that Katy did – while we
all know that robins
discovered and pitied the
babes in the woods, “and
covered them over with
leaves so green.”
From a hint of Anna’s

I had connected the time
of your visit to Auburn
with your going to Chicago
x

.
You speak of Cape May
there is a letter of mine
written yesterday – which
will reach you before this
and tell you how the
matter stands. There has
not yet come an answer

from Dr Norris
Birth: 1828-03-09 Death: 1895-11-10
to Will’s
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
letter. As
you were intending to see him
I hope he will have learned
from you those symptoms
which Will’s letter did not
contain – as Dr Robinson
Birth: 1804-02-04 Death: 1889-07-28

had not seen me when he
wrote. So I hope when
Will hears from him we shall
have his advice after consider-
ing the later statement. I
have ceased to think of
going to Cape May – or
of making any body a
visit – not being well enough
for the amount of social
exertion that implied – I
am in doubt about going away –
Page 4

whether a change is necessary –
this climate is damp & windy
now. I wonder if I should
be better elsewhere. Two
chills yesterday – but not a
great deal of fever. Today a
creeping coldness from ten
till one – and considerable
fever. from then till four.
I had an hour’s drive this
morning – in a buggy with William
Johnson
Birth: 1806 Death: 1881-11-30
. Mary Titus
Birth: 1846-01-11 Death: 1913-03-14
and Aunty
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03

have been here – and Mary
Segoine
Birth: 1843 Death: 1872-10-09
and Mr Brainard
Birth: 1830-06-04 Death: 1909-11-25
– during
the time when I have to lie
down with fever – so I
saw them in my room.
It is just after dinner –
Page 5

about six o’clock – I am
about to try a second
drive – with Jenny
Birth: 1839-11-18 Death: 1913-11-09
.
Mr Alward’s
Birth: 1830-12-18 Death: 1892-09-03
letter told
of a concert at Buckingham
Palace, of which the
programme was enclosed,
and the motto was taken
from the table on that
occasion. He says the
Adams family

are very
popular – Mrs Adams
attracting by her conversation –
Mary admired for her beauty,
and simplicity of manner.
Mrs Gray

spent last
evening here. All Mrs Perry

to me – and so are Mrs
Titus

and Mary.
Aunty has a charming letter
from Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
, just arrived
at Newport. Will writes
from Milwaukee to Jenny –
and telegraphs from Chicago –
today – goes to St. Louis to-
morrow night – and to Cin-
cinnati
Thursday – stopping there
at the Burnett House. We
hope he may reach home
by Sunday.
I hear the horses at the
door – good night.
Most affectionately your daughter
Fanny
The package containing
my dress has come.
