19th August 1866.
My dearest Father,
Your letter of the 17th came
last night. The papers of the
evening brought us the proclam-
tion – and brought also divers
conflicting accounts concerning
the Queen

and her visit to
you. So I was glad to
sit complacently in my rocking
chair – with your letter on
the table beside me – and say
"how little the newspapers know
of the real state of affairs!"

Harrisburg – expecting to be absent
most of the week.
I have had no chill today,
and less fever than yesterday.
I am following Dr Norris's

tions – stay in my room till
afternoon – breakfast before I
rise – lie down whenever I
am tired – I think it is
doing me good – for when I
do go down stairs I feel
fresh and strong for the remainder
of the day – from dinner

The building makes more
visible progress now that they
are at work on the brick.
The window frames are in –
and the spaces between are
partly filled up with bricks.
The papers say that
Mr Stanton
