Editorial Note

This was included with a letter George Washington Seward wrote to William Henry Seward written on the same date.
My Dear Brother
There comes a time, in
which all that makes life bright, joy-
ous, and happy, is suddenly taken
from us, leaving us in unutterable
sorrow and desolation.
By such a time, art thou again
reminded, that thy choicest treasures
are but lent, for a season, to brighten
lifes pilgrimage. and then trans-
planted to a fairer, better land, to
live in fadeless glory evermore
We know how useless all attempts
to comfort you in this great bereavement.
we can only commend you to the
loving kindness of the Father whom
your loved ones trusted, with the
prayer that He may sustain you, and
enable you to say “Even so Father; so
it seemed good in thy sight”
We deeply regret not being able to
show our sympathy by our presence

circumstances entirely beyond our con-
trol prevented.
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy
for yourself and children
