Auburn Dec 1/66
My dear Father
I found
herewith the Statement for
November, you will notice
that its unusually large as
it included many expenditures
made during October. The
bills for which I did not
get until last month. It
also included the large
sums paid on account
of building and drafts
from Washington. I have
just returned from N York
after a week absence and
find that very rapid improvement
has taken place in the house.
All the carpenter work in the rear
building has been completed
and the first coat of plaster
Page 2

is already on. I expect that
we shall occupy it by
January first. The range
is in and all the hot & cold
water pipes also gas pipes
the bath tubs and water closets
will be put in as we go
along. In looking over
the old Taylor building in
New York I found that I
could get bath tubs water closets
wash bowles &c for almost nothing
so I laid in a supply. I
also ordered six marble mantles
and grates sent to me, but
as they were under a pile
of rubbish I could not get
a very good idea of their quality,
at any rate they cost but
very little and if they don't
answer I can easily sell
them here. I propose
as near as I can to carry
Page 3

out the plan indicated
in my past letter viz.
to finish up the rear buildings
between this and next May
without altering or disturbing
the old part of the house.
Jenny

is delighted with
the prospect of getting such
convenient arrangements for
kitchen nursery laundry &c.
We have now I think paid
out for the heaviest part of the
improvements and I should
think that $2500 or $3000 will
cover the balance of the required
expenditures. Considering that
no estimate was made for
the new rear building I think
we have so far got along
very well, possibly my estimate
of additional amount required
is too low but its not far
out of the way. The terrace
Page 4

will be completed tomorrow
and looks very ornamental.
I have had it covered with
very heavy frog point stone
and think it will stand
the weather much better
than any tile.
I have found it necessary
to employ a clerk to keep
your books and look a little
sharper after collections than
I have been able to do. I have
therefore taken Henry Titus
Birth: 1849-06 Death: 1933-07-12
(son of
our Mr.
Birth: 1818-07-04 Death: 1905-05-26
& Mrs. Titus
Birth: 1820-05-18 Death: 1895-12-19
) who I find
a very fine boy and with his
help I shall now be able to keep
everything up promptly. Aunty
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03

spent the day with us yesterday
and seems to be very much better
than heretofore. I think she
will come to our home to stay
as soon as her room is finished.
Your affectionate
W H Seward Jr.
