Washington January 12
Dear Augustus
I was sick in bed when your
letter came or I would have answered it
sooner – To day I am better though I am
sure my cough will not leave me as
long as I stay here – The weather is damp
& cold – yesterday was a terrible day – rain-
ing from midnight until ten in the
evening – Mr. Blatchford
Birth: 1820-03-09 Death: 1893-07-07
came down
on Thursday – with Mr Grinell
Birth: 1803-03-03 Death: 1877-11-24
– they
are at Willards – Mr Blatchford was
so hoarse all last week he could hard-
ly speak loud – he said when he
came that Mr Weed
Birth: 1797-11-15 Death: 1882-11-22
intended to leave
for the South on Saturday– but when
Wharton
Birth: 1808-02-07 Death: 1868-09-09
– who came yesterday morning – said
he met Mr Weed – with his little dog – in
the street – on Saturday – I do not think
think they will go at all –

There is quite an excitement here a-
bout the N. York Senator – The report
here – last week – was that probably Mar-
shall O-Roberts
Birth: 1814 Death: 1880-09-11
– having the most money
to spend – would be nominated – This
week politicians say Gov. Morgan’s
Birth: 1811-02-08 Death: 1883-02-14
chances
are best – Until very lately he was sure
of a re election – but the cards have
shuffled and a new hand commenced–
since then – Anna
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02
& Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
gave a dinner
to 20- of the diplomatic corps on Saturday
- said to be handsomest entertain-
ment ever seen in Washington – In the [ eve- ing ]

Alternate Text: eve-ning
Anna had a reception – On Satur-
day there is to be another dinner of
the same number - Among others Gen. Grant
Birth: 1822-04-27 Death: 1885-07-23

& Mrs Grant
Birth: 1826-01-26 Death: 1902-12-14
– in the evening another recep-
tion – Anna looks almost worn out
– I am not surprised – I only wonder that
has continued so long – Father is quite
well again – he was sick for ten days after
he returned from the South – We play

Whist every evening – as usual – When
he is at home – but he dines out twice
a week and when we take out Sunday
he has but four card playing evenings –

decided on Wednesday – he will then
leave on Thursday – & I go with him –
