Auburn February 9th
My dear Augustus
I reached home last Sat-
urday – just a week to day – when I left
Washington- all were very well excepting
Anna
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02
– who was improving though her
finger was yet very sore – She went
out to drive in the Coupée every day
that was pleasant – and was gaining
strength rapidly – She has suffered great -
ly with her wound – but she is now out
of danger and when I came away could
sit up most of the day - Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
was very
well – went four or five times a week to
receptions – & dined out as often as twice
a week – Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25

do the “receiving” at
the Saturday evening receptions – Which
are the most “brilliant” (I think that is
the term) in Washington –Mrs Sanford
Birth: 1841-06-27 Death: 1902-06-01Certainty: Probable

has flourished at two or three of them

& was considered a great attraction –
They are to sail for Europe some-
time this month– I find the weather
very cold here but it was very
cold in Washington – The morning
I left they were cleaning the streets
with a snow plough – Fred writes
me that it is still very cold there –
Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
and Jenny
Birth: 1839-11-18 Death: 1913-11-09
were at home when
I came back – but yesterday he left
again for N. York – He said he for-
warded your invitation to Miss Mar-
tin’s
Birth: 1846-11-29 Death: 1870-03-29
wedding a few days ago –
It is to be a grand affair – Mary
Martin
Birth: 1838-05-05 Death: 1884-01-26
told me that Gen. Grant
Birth: 1822-04-27 Death: 1885-07-23

& Sheridan
Birth: 1831-03-06 Death: 1888-08-05
were coming certainly &
I don’t know how many other “distin-
guished people” from Washington &
New York - they are to occupy all the
houses in the vicinity of the Martins
x Birth: 1818-12-25  Death: 1899-07-09  Birth: 1808-11-25  Death: 1883-09-19

as lodging houses and all to take
their meals at the Martin’s own house
Page 3

You made quite escape leaving
Washington when you did – for I think
Miss Martin would have put your
services into active requisition – She is
never still – going morning noon and
night & into the night – If you
stay in Boston through the summer & do
not come home I think I shall come to
see you there – it is the only city at
the North that I have never visited – But
I hope you can come here – once at
least this summer—
Your affectionate
Aunty –
The Newfoundland dog has been sent
up to Mr. Martin's for the summer – I
am going up there to see him Where the
weather is milder–
