Washington January 25 th
My dear Augustus
I am still here though I
intend to leave on Thursday the 28 th so
when you answer this you may address
your letter to Auburn – where I expect
to be on Saturday – We have had fine
mild weather for nearly a week without
little rain or snow – I hear from the
North that the winter has been unusually
mild – so much so that there are fears
that the ice crop will fail – but there
will be cold weather in February –
Every thing is going here as usual – Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10

is remarkably well and dines out three
times a week – Last Saturday there was
another large dinner here – twenty three
guests – among others Gen Butler
Birth: 1818-11-05 Death: 1893-01-11
wife
Birth: 1816-08-17 Death: 1876-04-08
&
daughter
Birth: 1847-03-02 Death: 1939-12-16
- As every one had been invited
Anna
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02
says there will be a cessation

for a short time – I am glad of that
for her sake – The Saturday evening
receptions are continued – and increase
in numbers every week – We were all
sorry that Gov. Morgan
Birth: 1811-02-08 Death: 1883-02-14
was defeated
–it was as unexpected as any thing
I ever heard of – at 4 o’clock – of the
day of the nomination a telegram
was around in the city saying “Morgan’s
success is certain – the next new was
that Fenton
Birth: 1819-07-04 Death: 1885-08-25
was elected – Mr. Sumner
Birth: 1811-01-06 Death: 1874-03-11

was here last night – he seems to have
a more reliable constituency –
I hear nothing from Auburn excepting what
Eliza

and Mrs. Hale

write me - &
the little I glean from the papers –
All agree in saying they are having
a mild pleasant winter – Before I
came down Father said he would leave
here the middle of next month – the
prospect now is that they will continue
until after the 4 th of March –

Anna and Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
have commenced
to moving their things to Montrose - The
billiard table was packed & sent
away last week – It seems an endless
task to get the house entirely cleaned –
I have decided to go home by the Northern
Central – as I think that is after all
the shortest route - & I want to stop in
Canandaigua a day –
Anna has just been in and
sends her love to you – Father & Fred are
at the department – your affectionate
Aunty
