Editorial Note

Letter written by Olive Risley Seward for William H. Seward
Shanghai, China
Dec. 19, 1870
My dear William,
In the box I send
by Wells and Fargo, you
will find a parcel which
contains ammunition for
the magnificent rifle
which was presented to me
in San Francisco, and which
I learn that Gov. Randall
Birth: 1819-10-31 Death: 1872-07-26

has taken with him, to send
to you from San Francisco
to Elmira. I have found
that Freeman
Unknown
is over
charged with the care

of so many persons and
so much baggage. I have
therefore taken for the
present, an excellent
English servant named
Price
Birth: 1834-09-19
. He is very efficient
in disciplining my arms
and hands, and we begin
to think that they are im-
proving a little, under his
vigorous care. I find that
in the East two servants cost
the price of one first class
passenger. You will re-
ceive bills from here which
pay all the expenses incurred
and to be incurred in the
interval between our leaving
San Francisco, and our

arrival at Hong Kong

.
Affectionately
William H. Seward
