Charles Wilkes had an active role in the American Navy, and is known for exploring part of Antarctica which is now named for him. He was involved with the Trent Affair; he is the person responsible for stopping detaining two Confederate commissioners from the British steamer the "Trent." He was an acquaintance of the Seward family.
