Maxwell Van Zandt Woodhull was the son of Commander Maxwell Woodhull, a US Navy Officer who rented his house to the Seward family during their early years in Washington, DC.
Woodhull served in the Civil War for the Union, where he attained the rank of Brigadier General of volunteers. He worked as a lawyer before and after the war, and was responsible to bringing George Washington University to its current location in Washington, DC.
