RelationshipsBiography
Mary Beattie was the first wife of Joseph Gilmore Beattie. Mary lived with Joseph and his mother Agnes in 1855 in Seneca, NY. There are no children listed in that census. They appear in the 1860 census again, with the same domestic help, Ellen Lynch, but without Joseph's mother Agnes, and still without children. In 1862 on June 8, Frances Miller Seward writes about how Dr. Beattie travelled with Caroline Cornelia Schoolcraft (nee Canfield), whom he married in 1862 (seemingly before Frances Seward knew of it). Frances Seward is scandalized because as far as she knows Mary Beattie is still living, thus Dr. Beattie would have left her to travel with Caroline Schoolcraft.

Citation Notes: The marriage of Dr. Joseph Beattie and Caroline Cornelia Schoolcraft (nee Canfield) should not be used as evidence that Mary had died at this point. However, I had no luck tracking Mrs. Beattie after the 1860 Seneca census.
