Biography
Nelson Beardsley was born on May 30, 1807, in Southbury, Connecticut, the daughter of John and Alice (Booth) Beardsley. Nelson's father moved to Scipio, Cayuga County, New York, in 1808, where he was involved in local politics. Nelson attended the Cayuga Academy in Aurora, New York, and entered Yale Academy in 1823. Upon graduation, he studied law with John W. Hulbert of Auburn, New York, and then entered a partnership with William H. Seward. Upon Seward's election to Governor of New York, Nelson partnered with John Porter. Nelson became president of the Cayuga County Bank in 1843. He was also one of the incorporators of the Oswego Starch Company and a trustee of the Auburn Savings Bank. Nelson married Frances Powers in 1836. Together they had six daughters before her premature death in 1854. Nelson Beardsley died on January 15, 1894, at the age of 87.
