Biography

Representative, senator, and governor from Michigan. Moved from NY to Green Oak, MI in 1833, then admitted to the bar. Also held a number of local offices. Elected to Michigan house of representatives in 1837, and reelected 4 times. Elected as a Democrat to the 30th and 31st Congresses, 1847-1851. Chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State during 31st Congress. Elected Governor in 1854 and was reelected in 1856. Elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate and served from March 4, 1859, until his death on October 5, 1861.
