Birth: 6-9-1811
Death: 8-12-1882
Alternate First Name: Alonso
Biography
Alonzo Sidney Upham was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1847-1848, and a New York State Senator from 1850-1853, and 1856-1857. In January 1856, he was elected President pro tempore of the State Senate. Alonzo lived in LeRoy, NY for most of his life, where he was a carriage-maker and manufacturer of railroad cars.
Alonzo is the subject of a letter sent by Hanson A. Risley to Frederick W. Seward on December 29, 1864. In this letter, Clarance writes that Alonzo is looking for a treasury appointment since he "is evidently depressed by his recent afflictions." Alonzo's first wife, Mary, had died in November 1864, and this is the likely cause of these afflictions.
Additionally, Alonzo was the uncle of Fanny Seward's friend Sarah Upham.
