Thomas "Tad" Lincoln was the youngest son of Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. Tad is frequently mentioned in diaries and letters from the Sewards time in Washington, especially because he was close in age to Fanny Seward. He contracted typhoid fever in 1862 alongside his brother Willie but survived the illness. 

After Lincoln's assassination, Tad moved with his mother and older brother Robert to Chicago. He attended school there but died in Chicago in 1871 at the age of 18. His exact cause of death is a subject of debate.
