Biography

Civil War Union Brigadier General who organized volunteer troops from Ohio. Prior to the Civil War, he was Adjutant General of the Ohio State Militia. After the Civil War, he was stationed in Colorado and conducted military operations. While out west, his military headquarters were attacked by Sioux Indians a number of times. He retired from active military service in 1870 due to wounds received in battles. From 1870 to 1878 he was a professor of military science at Wabash College and became a war historian.
